Criminal Lawmakers Getting YOUR Tax Dollars
January 05, 2007
Lawmakers who have been found guilty of or pleaded guilty to criminal offences while in office are eligible, and are receiving, government pensions paid for directly with your tax dollars.
Congressman Mark Kirk (IL), a long-time supporter of revoking federal pensions for convicted criminal lawmakers, has introduced H.R. 14, the Congressional Integrity and Pension Forfeiture Act of 2007, that would end payments to such former members as James Trafficant (bribery, racketeering, tax evasion) and Randall "Duke" Cunningham (tax evasion, conspiracy to accept bribes), each of whom is wholly entitled to collect an annual pension paid for by the rest of us.
House Democrats, too, have indicated that they will again propose legislation that would strip members of their pensions if convicted of a felony, perhaps finally putting an end to this egregious policy.
